Digitisation

University of Szeged Klebelsberg Library carries out extensive digitisation-related activities, to support teaching and research at the university.

1. Request a digital copy
Digital copies of documents in the library’s collection may be requested for a fee under the following conditions.

Registered academics and PhD students may request a digital copy of documents held in our library for private, individual use for a fee. Only if the copyright has expired can the complete publication be digitised. For any other documents only extracts will be digitised if they pass the three-step test:
– does not prejudice the normal exploitation of the work
– does not harm the legitimate interests of the author
– meets the requirements of fairness

We will also accept digitisation requests for educational illustration purposes (book excerpts, newspaper and journal articles) if the use of the copy does not replace the purchase and normal use of materials for the educational market.

For students with a library registration and other clients for private, individual use, we can only digitise works that are no longer protected by copyright.

2. Digitisation order requests for large quantities or projects

The library is equipped with several high performance scanners, allowing us to meet the high volume of digitisation needs of various university departments and other clients.

Text and data mining projects for research purposes at the university have access to input raw text materials. This type of material may be made available online to research staff, provided that it is not used for the purpose of earning or enhancing income.

Reproduction for the purposes of text and data mining for research purposes is considered to be fair use if:
– the user making the reproduction has lawful access to the work,
– the rightholder has not objected to the use in advance,
– the copies are kept only for the time necessary for text and data mining.

For a fee, we also undertake the digitisation of all types of paper documents, theses and publications.

3. Retrospective Digitisation according to the Klebelsberg Library’s Digitisation Strategy

The library’s core mission is to enhance its digital collections through planned analogue-to-digital conversions. Our primary task is to digitise scientific, literary and historical publications related to the University of Szeged and its predecessors. We attach great importance to the long-term preservation of both students’ works (e.g. theses, dissertations) and the products of teaching and research activities (e.g. publications, university actas, educational materials).

In addition to sources related to the university, a secondary priority is the digitisation of materials related to the city of Szeged, for example the Délmagyarország daily newspaper and the Tiszatáj literary journal.

The above considerations may be influenced by the conservation reasons for the long-term preservation of our documents, which are of course also taken into account in our planned digitisation projects.

Our locally digitised collections are available thematically in the Contenta repository system.
